The air-conditioning evaporator is a small radiator inside the dashboard that provides cold air for the air-conditioning system. It’s called the evaporator because it’s where the freezing liquid refrigerant takes on any heat from the air blown through it and changes into a gaseous state (evaporating it) before returning it to the air-conditioning condenser to shed the heat; the process is constantly repeated. The air that emerges from the air conditioner is cold as a result. 
 
The evaporator is typically hidden inside the vehicle’s dashboard and can be labor-intensive to replace, which then requires a full system recharge. Unlike a ruptured heater core, which can leak engine coolant into the foot wells, a leak in the evaporator releases only refrigerant vapor. A clogged drainage channel is a common cause of water in the front foot wells.
 
What are the main causes of an A/C Evaporator core failure?
There can be quite several reasons why your evaporator will fail, such as leaks, internal damage, faulty ac components, etc. Below are the 3 common causes that can cause your vehicle a/c evaporator to fail.

Refrigerant Leakage


There are several reasons why a leak occurs. In most cases, a seam or weld has gone bad.
 
Corrosion
This often happens because leaves or other organic material enter the evaporator case through the exterior air intake vents and come in contact with the evaporator’s surface, this moisture surface and decomposition of organic materials can form corrosive substances which could eventually damage the evaporator core.
 
Road debris
The evaporator fins are also susceptible to clogging from leaves or hair from pets and other outside road debris. The only true permanent fix for a leaking evaporator core is the replacement of the component.
 
Replacement & installation
Properly evacuate the A/C system making sure there are no positive pressure readings on gauges before doing any repair to the ac system. The procedure for removal and replacement of the evaporator core is different for every car make, model, and year. In most cases, the removal of the entire dashboard is needed to get access to the HVAC evaporator case.
