What Do You Know About Brake Shoes?

March 29,2022

We all know the importance of braking system to a car. However, the final braking action cannot be completed without a component, that is, the brake shoes. We are going to talk about this part today.

What Is Brake Shoes?

Automobile brake pad refers to the friction material fixed on the brake drum or brake disc rotating with the wheel. The friction lining and friction pad bear external pressure and produce friction, so as to achieve the purpose of vehicle deceleration. The brake shoe is divided into front brake shoes and rear brake shoes.

The automobile brake pad is generally composed of steel plate, adhesive heat insulation layer and friction block. The heat insulation layer is composed of non heat transfer materials for heat insulation. The friction block is composed of friction materials and adhesives. When braking, it is squeezed on the brake disc or brake drum to produce friction to realize the goal of vehicle deceleration and brake. Like the oil filter for 2020 chevy silverado 1500, the brake shoes are essential to the safety driving.

Types Of Brake Shoes

In terms of brake types, it can be divided into: brake pads for disc brakes and brake shoes for drum brakes. According to different materials, it can be divided into asbestos brake pads, "semi metal" mixture brake pads, less metal brake pads and ceramic brake pads

Asbestos Brake Shoes

Asbestos brake pads are common in drum brakes. Because asbestos fiber is characterized by high strength and high temperature resistance, it can meet the requirements of brake pads. Moreover, it is very cheap, and its ore resources are very rich. However, because asbestos itself is insulated and has poor thermal conductivity, it will accumulate a lot of heat in the brake pad after repeated braking, resulting what we often call serious heat attenuation and even brake failure.

"Semi Metal" Mixture Brake Shoes

"Semi metallic" brake pads are mainly made of rough steel fibers or copper wires which are used to reinforce fibers and as important mixtures. Many vehicles use this kind of brake pad because it is cheap and wear-resistant.

Less Metal Brake Shoes

The braking effect of less metal brake pad is better than that of semi metal, and it is not easy to make noise and damage the disc. Less metal is the material containing a small amount of iron, which is generally steel wool, so its production cost is higher than that of semi-metallic brake pads.

Ceramic Brake Shoes

The ceramic brake pad is composed of ceramic fiber, filler material without iron, adhesive and a small amount of metal, including mineral fiber, aramid fiber and ceramic fiber. It has lighter color and higher value content than other brake pads. The ceramic brake pad is cleaner and quieter, and it does not wear the dual parts while providing excellent braking performance.

When To Change The Brake Shoes?

There is no regulated cycles of brake pads change. Different driving habits and road conditions will make great differences in the wear of brake pads.

When the thickness of the brake pad is less than the minimum replacement standard allowed in the vehicle manual:

  • There is a raised sign on both sides of each brake pad. The thickness of this sign is about two or three millimeters, which is also the limit when the brake disc reaches the thinnest. If the thickness of the brake pad has been parallel to this sign, it must be replaced.

When the wear indicator of the brake pad contacts the brake disc and gives an alarm (including computer alarm or the harsh sound of metal friction):

  • If the light braking is accompanied by the "iron rubbing iron" sound (it may also be the effect of the running in of the brake pad at the beginning of installation), the brake pad must be replaced immediately.

When the brake pad is polluted by a large area of grease:

  • Because the brake pad itself is mixed with a variety of materials, there will be some gap between different molecular materials in the process of high-pressure manufacturing. Once it is soaked in a large area by grease, it is easy to change the molecular structure of the whole brake pad, resulting in skid, strength reduction and even embrittlement of the brake pad.

When the brake shoes is in abnormal wear or fracture:

  • Automobile brake pads are consumables and will gradually wear out in use. When they are worn to the limit position, they must be replaced, otherwise it will reduce the braking effect and even cause safety accidents.
