Everything You Need To Know About Oil Filter
March 28,2022
For some new drivers, they know little about the oil filter. Someone asks that “why do I need an oil change?” Actually, oil maintenance is the most basic item in automobile maintenance. Engine oil maintenance often determines the service life and driving performance of vehicles, so engine oil is known as the "blood" of the engine.
However, with the use of cars, there will be more and more sundries in the engine oil. Therefore, the engine oil must be changed regularly. Then, is it necessary to change the oil filter together when changing the oil. Let’s move on.
What Is Oil Filter?
Oil filter, as the name implies, is used to filter oil. During the operation of the engine, the engine oil will become dirty continuously, and the pollution sources mainly come from:
Dust, moisture and other external impurities entering through the intake air of the engine;
Metal chips caused by cylinder wear;
Various organic acids, coke pitch and carbides produced by engine oil oxidation.
These impurities will degrade the lubricating effect of the engine oil, produce oil sludge, and even cause the wear of the engine. The function of oil filter is to filter out these harmful impurities, so that the oil can maintain good lubrication performance within its working life. To put it simply, the oil filter is equivalent to the kidney of an automobile.
Structure Of Oil Filter
According to the structure, the oil filter can be divided into replaceable type, rotary type and centrifugal type; According to the arrangement in the system, it can be divided into full flow type and split flow type. The filter materials used in oil filter include filter paper, felt, metal mesh, nonwovens, etc.
Working Principle Of Oil Filter
During the working process of the engine, metal wear debris, dust, carbon deposit and colloidal sediment oxidized at high temperature, water, etc. are constantly mixed with the lubricating oil. The function of the oil filter is to filter out these mechanical impurities and colloids, keeping the lubricating oil clean and prolonging its service life. The engine oil filter shall have strong filtering capacity, small flow resistance and long service life.
In general, several filters with different filtration capacity, that are filter collector, coarse filter and fine filter are installed in the lubrication system, which are connected in parallel or in series in the main oil passage respectively. The filter connected in series with the main oil passage is called full flow filter; The filter connected in parallel is called shunt filter. The first strainer that is connected in series in the main oil passage, which is full flow type; The secondary filter that is connected in parallel in the main oil passage is split flow type. Modern automobile engines are generally equipped with only a filter collector and a full flow oil filter. The coarse filter is used to filter the impurities with particle size of more than 0.05mm in the engine oil, while the fine filter is used to filter the fine impurities with particle size of more than 0.001 mm.
When To Change The Oil Filter?
- When the oil filter is not used, the shelf life is generally three years. If after three years, it is best not to use it anymore;
- It is found that the vehicle starts slowly or needs to be started several times;
- When the truck is idling (the lowest power operation of the engine when parking is called idling), it feels the engine shaking;
- When the vehicle accelerates rapidly, it feels weak to start and the driving speed is unstable;
- When changing the oil, the oil filter should also be changed together;
- The engine makes an abnormal sound, which indicates that there may be a problem with the oil filter.
